Already thought that Ubuntu seems to use newer software in general, despite Debian, which, generally uses older, as with more legacy drivers.

I suspect the best depends on your hardware, plus the use case you intend for your box. Ubuntu is usually easier (and when I mention Ubuntu I'm meaning flavors if desktop is desired; not GNOME)
