I Suddenly found my main UbuntuMate account folders empty, either those on the Desktop or inside subfolders like Documents, Downloads (except most few recent ones). Later, I found that happened too to the other account. There are also some partitions I found totally emptied, while all those places had tens to hundreds of Gigabytes of unencrypted data (not backed up yet). Some other partitions not deleted (NTFS).
I looked at the HDD from a live CD, and found that there are two unknown partitions have been created and have empty Linux filesystem folders on them, with each partition has almost all the space free.

The filesystem is ext4 for the Linux partition and NTFS for other partitions, and everything in the system is mostly default, I'm trying to stay aways from proprietary software too. I had some opensource tools recently installed though.

Either if this is a hacking attack, or a software/hardware issue.. how would you go around it, the easiest and fastest way possible to restores all these deleted data?

I am thinking about making clones of the safe partitions first, then try restoring the original partition table or any thing like that, before using Photorec or similar apps to restore everything possible
