I'm having to manually fsck almost every boot, and am unable to update or install new programs due to a specific error in the process. Don't recall what offhand but can boot and find out. Anyway, I think it's likely a hardware issue but want to be sure.

It is unclear whether the data is important and you want to rescue it, or you just want to playing around with a dying hard disk and trying to fix hardware

We can't be sure too , if you have important data back it up and make fresh install and if the problem continues you have you answer .
