Thank you very much. Had a read through it, it seems incredibly complicated though. I was hoping I could just click on run or install. Thanks for taking the time to answer though. Scott

To install Linux Mint you'll need to create a bootable media, usually a USB thumb drive.
On Windows you can download a tool called Rufus.
If you're already on Linux, you can check for USB drives with the command:
lsblk
A USB drive will usually have a path like /dev/sdc
Now to burn the image you can use this command: (but be warned this will delete all data on that drive)
dd if=/path/to/image.iso of=/dev/sdX status=progress
But make sure to replace /path/to/image.iso
and /dev/sdX
with your correct ones.

Does anyone know how to run or install software on Linux ?
– Scott

@Scott You will first have to install Linux. After that, you may install software on Linux. To get a sense of how a Linux system works, you may want to install Linux in a virtual machine, such as VirtualBox, before actually installing it "for real". The Linux Mint installation instructions that I linked to in my comment to your question are the instructions you should follow for installing Linux Mint on your computer, these could also be followed for installing Linux in VitualBox (VirtualBox can boot off an ISO image).

Hello, thank you for taking the time to answer. I am actually using linux cinnamon 18.1 64 bit and am hoping to upgrade to 19.1. All I want to do is update but there is no option that I can find to "update" or "run" or "install" or anything similar. I downloaded the software using the transmission program. I tried installing it by following instructions for package manager and software manager but they did not make any sense to me. What is a virtual machine ?
