I have had the same problem, using configuration that was imported from a previous machine.

Here is how I solved this issue:

$ sudo rm -v /var/lib/postfix/master.lock
$ sudo systemctl start postfix

In my case there were also issues with a postfix process being left from previous attempts, here is the solution:

-- check that postfix is not running:

$ ps faxu | grep -i [p]ostfix
root 12854 0.0 0.2 92004 2236 ? Ss 07:23 0:00 /usr/libexec/postfix/master -w
postfix 12855 0.0 0.4 98320 4088 ? S 07:23 0:00 _ pickup -l -t fifo -u
postfix 12856 0.0 0.4 98388 4128 ? S 07:23 0:00 _ qmgr -l -t fifo -u
postfix 12872 0.0 0.4 98332 4672 ? S 07:29 0:00 _ tlsmgr -l -t unix -u

-- If you have postfix processes running, kill them all:

$ sudo kill -9 12854 12855 12856 12872

-- after killing all the processes, remove the master.lock file and start postfix with systemctl (see above).

Finally, don't forget that the queue_directory should point to /var/spool/postfix ...

    I have had the same problem, using configuration that was imported from a previous machine.

    Here is how I solved this issue:

    $ sudo rm -v /var/lib/postfix/master.lock
    $ sudo systemctl start postfix

    In my case there were also issues with a postfix process being left from previous attempts, here is the solution:

    -- check that postfix is not running:

    $ ps faxu | grep -i [p]ostfix
    root 12854 0.0 0.2 92004 2236 ? Ss 07:23 0:00 /usr/libexec/postfix/master -w
    postfix 12855 0.0 0.4 98320 4088 ? S 07:23 0:00 _ pickup -l -t fifo -u
    postfix 12856 0.0 0.4 98388 4128 ? S 07:23 0:00 _ qmgr -l -t fifo -u
    postfix 12872 0.0 0.4 98332 4672 ? S 07:29 0:00 _ tlsmgr -l -t unix -u

    -- If you have postfix processes running, kill them all:

    $ sudo kill -9 12854 12855 12856 12872

    -- after killing all the processes, remove the master.lock file and start postfix with systemctl (see above).

    Finally, don't forget that the queue_directory should point to /var/spool/postfix ...
