I spent the day yesterday with some friends in Manhattan. We were in a food commons area of a mall and had just started to eat a pizza when a couple of college age guys stopped at our table and one of them said “Can I have a slice?”
My friend replied “Sure, if you pay for it” and then the guy said “Oh, you’re not from around here” and then he and his friend quickly walked away.
My friends and I are wondering if he actually wanted a slice of pizza or if he was asking for something else. We are all from the Midwest so forgive us if we are out of touch with modern East Coast sayings/slang.

Urban Dictionary is always a good place to look, and in this case it defines slice as "an eighth ounce of marijuana." (This apparently comes from the idea of a pizza being cut into eight slices.) So possibly the guy thought you were selling drugs and wanted to buy some.

@ Nate Eldredge, that is a possibility because our pizza was cut into eight pieces and all of us hadn’t shaved for a few days because we were on vacation so we may have appeared as local drug dealers.

He may well have been literally asking for a slice, more likely he was just using that line as an ice breaker so he could approach you. Your friends' response was a little aggressive so he was embarrassed and decided to leave.
