Environment variable TERM specifies a terminal type, while DISPLAY specifies a display.

Is there some environment variable that specifies a terminal (e.g. /etc/tty or /etc/pts/1)? Is there any need to specify a terminal besides a terminal type?

Is there some environment variable that specifies a display type (I have no experience with display type, so can't give example)? Is there any need to specify a display type?

Is it correct that terminal is used only by CLI programs, and display is used only by GUI programs?

Thanks.

If you can't explain what you mean by "display type", how are we meant to know what you mean?

  • I don't have a link to give. Every thing has a type, so should a display
