I've been using Windows and Bitlocker for years. I recently decided to give linux a try because of the beautiful Deepin OS distro.

Encrypting my device is a must for me and most of the tutorials I found were quite difficult for me to follow. I found one tutorial to encrypt the HOME folder using ecryptfs-migrate tool. Encrypting the home folder was as simple as running the command sudo ecryptfs-migrate-home -u user.

I have a few concerns.

  1. I don't know much about how app stores data/cache on linux. Is the above tool I used enough to encrypt my HOME folder? If yes, is encrypting the HOME folder enough? It's not the same as bitlocker's complete Drive encryption.

  2. In case encrypting only HOME is enough to prevent leaks due from App data/cache, How do I verify sudo ecryptfs-migrate-home -u user worked and encrypted my HOME folder?

When answering please remember I'm a Windows user and have barely any knowledge about linux.

Thanks for your help.
